A Very Fine 19th Century Sioux Beaded Possible Bag

Sold $4,400
April 22, 2023 Native American Fine Art and Cultural Objects

We offered the Susan Koehn April 22, 2023 Native American Fine Art and Cultural Objects
Trust Collection in April of 2023.

It was filled with fine Native
American Crafts and Jewelry. One highlight was this 19th century Lakota Sioux ‘Possible Bag’ meticulously decorated in glass beads sewn on hide using the sinew of an animal for thread. Horsehair tufts dyed red and crimped in tin cone tinklers on each end provided added ornamentation.

In his 1979 book Native Art
in the Denver Art Museum Richard Conn writes, “The term Possible bag was the name given by early nineteenth-century traders to these rectangular soft-skin bags. The term is a direct translation
from the Indian word meaning a bag for every possible thing.’’’

This Possible Bag was bid to $4,400 at the Koehn sale in April of 2023.
