Twelve Meiji Japanese Zodiac Symbol Carved Wood Netsuke

Sold $58,000
March 18, 2023 Late Winter Gallery Auction

Josephine Bird Hall was born in 1888, four years after her father co-founded the Emery. Bird, Thayer Department Store on Petticoat Lane in downtown Kansas City. She was a consummate collector with grand and varied interests. She had a great eye and an impressive understanding of antiques and art objects from various cultures and time periods.

Her collection had been winnowed over several decades yet still contained notable and even important objects. This group of twelve Japanese carved wood netsuke in a wood divider with original Bird Collection tag from the early 20th century was offered in our Spring Gallery Auction and sold to an Asian buyer for $58,000.
