Auction Highlight: The archives of Alma N. Nash (1883-1965), Missouri
born suffragist and nationally recognized musician from 1913 to 1965.
This expansive collection of personal artifacts spans the decades of Ms. Nash’s parents and grandparents, the 1860s, to the time of her passing, the 1960s. It includes multiple reams of correspondence between Ms. Nash and members of the suffragette movement, as well as figures in the early 20th century music industry. There are many related photographs, real photo postcards, brochures, handbills, broadsides, scrapbooks, clippings, personal notes, sheets and books of music, and much more.
Ms. Nash organized the Missouri Ladies Military Band, a twenty-two-piece ensemble of female music students from her hometown of Maryville, Missouri. The group gained national recognition when they led the Woman Suffrage Procession in Washington, D.C., on March 3, 1913.
After moving from Maryville to Kansas City, she remained dedicated to music and music education, teaching an estimated 4,000 students, while representing a number of musical instrument companies like Gibson and Viva-tone. Her contributions to music were recognized by the Fretted Instruments Guild of America, which honored her as the “grand lady of the mandolin.”
