A LATE 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN THIRTEEN STAR FLAG

48: A LATE 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN THIRTEEN STAR FLAG

A hand-sewn bunting ensign flag of the type that was used in both official capacity and by private citizens. The Navy used similar flags on small craft in the 1870s and American citizens commemorated the thirteen original colonies and the country's centennial with this same type of flag. Measures 28.5 x 44 and is mounted in a shadowbox frame that measures 33 x 48.75 inches.
Examination through the glass of the shadowbox mount confirms a gouge on the top edge, several scattered holes and thin spots and losses to the sewn on stars, these on the side that is visible.
