75A: A RARE MISSOURI STONEWARE STORAGE JAR SIGNED HUMMEL

A rare and handsome semi-ovoid two-handled Missouri stoneware vessel, the unusual form in beautiful proportions having two strap handles, a pronounced rim at the mouth, salt glaze, beautiful golden brown color, hand scribed numeral 6 denotes the size, just below the 6 is the maker's oval stamp with lettering J.M. HUMMEL FLORENCE MORGAN CO MO. MASTER POTTER John M. Hummel was born in Germany. He operated a pottery in Florence from sometime just before 1882 to around 1892. An old walnut cover is included and could be original to the piece. Over time, wood shrinks with the wood grain, causing round objects to become somewhat oval which would prevent the jar's round opening from accepting a more oval form.
Crock measure 16.5 x 14.5, lid measures 1.75 x 6 inches.
Very good condition. There are no chips, cracks or repairs.
