204: A PAIR 19TH C. STAGE ACTOR OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAITS

Two oil paintings by Salina, Kansas artist J.A. Day dated 1888. The subjects, Fred G. and Gertrude Andrews were actors playing in a production of Rip Van Winkle in the old New Theater previously 7th and Iron Streets in Salina, Kansas. The February 8, 1912 Salina Evening Journal reported, "The gifts of pictures to the officials at the new city hall continues and yesterday evening they were the recipients of two pictures which are locally historic. The pictures were given by the 'members who made up the old Fourth Regiment Band of Salina with the permission of the-members.... The pictures are those of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Anderson, who were-formerly actors well known to Salina.... Both pictures were painted by J. A. Day in 1888. Mr. Day now resides in New York city, where he is becoming noted in his profession." one is signed lower left, each is titled on the original oak frames. Frames measure 50 x 36 inches each.
