A 19C. RIDGWAY & CO SALT-GLAZED TAM O'SHANTER JUG

67: A 19C. RIDGWAY & CO SALT-GLAZED TAM O'SHANTER JUG

A salt-glazed yellow ware jug stamped 'Published by W. Ridgway & Co Hanley, October 1, 1835' on the base. The story of Tam O'Shanter as told by poet Robert Burns begins on one side as a drinking scene and continues on the opposite side summarizing Tam's story of witches and warlocks being responsible for his coming home late inebriated. During the party his horse lost her tail which his buddies clipped. Tam tells his wife the witches did it, thus the interesting handle on the jug - a witch's hand gripping a horse tail. Unlike most, this example is fitted with a pewter rim and hinged cover with thumb lift. Measures 8 x 7 inches. We happily provide seamless in-house packing and shipping services on nearly everything we sell.
Very good condition. There are no chips, cracks, repairs or issues of wear.
