A JAPANESE MEIJI CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL SHIPPO VASE

262: A JAPANESE MEIJI CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL SHIPPO VASE

A very high quality example of the type, with lively and typically Japanese decoration, suggesting this piece was made for the home market where quality survived to quite a late date as opposed to more commonly found more hurried export wares destined for the western market. This example finely decorated with colored roundels of phoenix, chilong, lotus and foliage on a black ground, then 'overlaid' with spiraling vertical bands of two shades of russet or puce worked with flowers and foliage, a narrow band of small dragons at the neck. Measures 5.5 x 10 inches.
Two chips on the bottom quarter of the vase. A large chip and a large flake on the upper third near the shoulder. Another chip in the black ground near the mid-point of the body.
