129: AFTER ALEXANDER CABANEL, 'CLEOPATRA TESTING POISON ON..."

A late 19th century oil on canvas painting after the original by the Alexander Cabanel (1823 - 1889). When the original was finished in 1887, Cabanel's painting 'Cleopatra Testing Poisons on Condemned Prisoners' was received with great enthusiasm and major collectors from all over Europe wanted it. The original now hangs in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp. In this fine quality version, as with the original, Cleopatra VII is seen sitting at a banquet observing the effects of poisons on prisoners condemned to death. The size of the work itself measures 33 x 57 with an overall framed size of 37 x 61.5 inches. Provenance: The Joseph Candioto Trust. We ship in-house for all items with the exception of very large and or very fragile pieces and some international shipments.
Very good original condition. With the exception of one small puncture and two areas of touch-up visible under UV light. The puncture is 3/16 of an inch in diameter. One area of inpainting measures approximately 1/2 inch wide and 3 inches long while the other measures approximately 1.5 inches in diameter. Both are in the lower half of the composition. There are no other areas of damage or repair. There are no other scratches, tears, repairs, areas of touch-up or inpainting, no flaking or loss. The surface has even shine and appears only lightly soiled from surface grime, the canvas and stretchers are original, there has been no relining or strip lining.
