Untitled (Adam and Eve) (1884)
An interpretation of the Adam and Eve parable complete with apple and snake on a moss-covered rock precipice within a landscape not unlike that of Missouri, including thistle, magnolia and maple. The artist's monogram and date of '84 is painted in red pigment lower right front.
From 1880 to 1885, Conrad Diehl taught art at the University of Missouri-Columbia, replacing George Caleb Bingham and eventually became Professor and Chairman of the Art Department. He'd previously been instrumental in the establishment of art schools and academies in St. Louis and Chicago after studies in Munich and Paris.
Sight size measures 20.25 x 24 with a framed size of 40 x 35 inches.
Very good condition, noting professional restoration, relined, 16 to 20 areas of inpainting approximately 1.5 to 3 inches in size throughout the lower 2/3rds of the canvas.
