An exceptional 19th century Italian school carved marble grouping of the standing satyr Silenus depicted with a grape leaf wreath in his hair standing next to a column encircled by grape vines, a lion-headed cloak hanging from his arm forming the cloven hoof of a satyr as he cradles the child Dionysus (Bacchus) with grape wreath in his hair. The composition after the Roman copy based on a Greek bronze statue of the 4th century BC. Unsigned, the height is 43 inches. This work was purchased by Joseph Candioto from the Museum of the World auction conducted by Christie's on the museum premises in Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1981. Provenance: The Joseph Candioto Trust.
