L'Inconnue de la Seine or The Unknown Woman of the Seine (1900 - 1920)
The bronze likeness of a young girl found drowned in the Seine river in the late 19th century. The subject of considerable legend, identical examples in plaster, marble, bronze and terra cotta in exact reproduction of the original can be found. This example bears the stamped founder's mark of CAST BY GRIFFOUL NEWARK, NEW JERSEY and is of the highest quality with fine dark green patina.
Andre Griffoul, son of John-Baptiste Griffoul, Paris founder for Rodin, emigrated to the United States in April of 1899 and opened a foundry at 280 Chestnut Street in Newark, New Jersey. The firm was in business until early 1919.
Measures 12 x 8.5 x 6 inches.
Very good condition throughout, no damage, repair or heavy wear.
