GEORGE LUKS (1867-1933) OIL ON CANVAS

132: GEORGE LUKS (1867-1933) OIL ON CANVAS

George Benjamin Luks
Cyril (1921)
Oil on canvas, signed lower left front, titled and signed verso, displayed in the original frame.
Canvas measures 20.25 x 16 inches in a 28.25 x 24.25 inch frame.
Very good condition, recent cleaning and restoration as noted verso, no relining, original canvas and stretchers, less than 3% of surface in-painting: blended surface area at the extreme upper left, one spot approximately .5 inch diameter left side of the figure at the hair's edge, a second area just to the right of this approximately .25 inch by 1.25 inches. There are no issues of scratches, losses, repairs or other in-painting or touch-up. The frame has been repaired lower left front.
Provenance: Purchased in New York by Mrs. Margaret B. Robinson, Kansas City Missouri around 1921 or 1922. The Robinsons were a prominent Kansas City family and publishers of the Kansas City Social Register from 1880 to 1998. Mrs. Robinson always told that she met the artist and asked him sign and title this painting on the canvas verso. That said, C.W. Kraushaar Art Galleries hosted an exhibition of 'Recent Paintings and Watercolors' by George Luks January 12 to 31, 1922; and that exhibition catalog lists entry number 5 as an oil painting titled Cyril.
