The Jolly Flat Boat Men (1847)
After the 1846 oil painting 'The Jolly Flatboat Men' now in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; mezzotint engraving with roulette by T. Doney and identified as such lower right corner ENGRAVED BY T. DONEY, printed by Powell and Company and indicated as such lower right PAINTED BY POWELL & CO, colored by hand, published by American Art Union, New York. With this example, the central dancing figure at the apex of the composition is depicted wearing a green shirt, unlike the majority of engravings, and the original painting itself, where the figure is depicted in red.
Measures 18 x 24.75, frame is 29.5 x 32.5 inches.
Good condition, presented in the images here outside the frame and mat: the full sheet without trimming, a repair in the left margin, mat burn around the image, scattered tears (some with repairs).
Provenance: The Van Dyke family, Marshall, Missouri civic leaders and entrepreneurs conducting business on the Marshall, Missouri square beginning around 1871. Their family collection of Art and Antiques spans more than four generations.
