422: ZUNI CORN MAIDEN CARVINGS

The large mother-of-pearl shell carved as three corn maidens with bits of inlaid stone and glass beads, the reverse carved with a sun god and inlaid with spiny oyster shell. Plus a smaller Dumortierite carving as a pair of corn maidens with coral insets. In native American beliefs, the corn maidens have been thought to have save peoples from famine. The large piece has the hallmark, 'AL ZUNI.'
Measures 1.75 and 4 inches.
Very good condition, free from damage or loss.
